Liberia: Weah Maintains Lead In Presidential Race
Former Vice President now, the main opposition leader Joseph Boakai says with the pronouncement of 99.97 percent of the overall vote cast on October 10, it is now imminent that there will be a runoff between he and incumbent President George Weah.
Addressing a news conference in Monrovia Thursday, Boakai called on his supporters to get prepare for the task ahead.
He said the massive show of strength in the first round send a strong statement to President Weah that Liberians are ready for change.
Meanwhile, the former Vice President says if elected following the second round, he will work to create a government of inclusion, representing all segments of the society.
Meanwhile, the progressive tally results released by the National Elections Commission once again put President Weah ahead of Boakai.
Releasing another set of results on Thursday, the Chairperson of the Commission—Davidetta Brown Lansana said with 5,888 polling places out of the total of 5,890 polling places reporting, Weah obtained 43.8,4 percent while Boakai got 43.3,4 percent.
She said of the total votes cast, President Weah got 803,956 votes, noting that Boaki obtained 796,513 votes.
At the same time, Commissioner Lansana noted that the final results in the Presidential category will be announced following the rerun of election at two polling centers in Nimba County on October 20, 2023.
