Liberia: Main Opposition Leader Runs To Court

Liberia’s main opposition leader—Joseph Boakai of the former ruling Unity Party has taken authorities at the National Elections Commission to court after failing to publish the Final Registration Roll (FRR) ahead of the October 10, 2023 presidential and legislative elections.

The decision by Boakai to take the electoral commissioners to the Supreme Court through his party was reached after the electoral umpire defaulted on its promise to have released the FRR on September 21, 2023.

In his thirteen counts petition in which he is seeking a Writ of Mandamus, Boakai said consistent with the 2023 Voter Registration Regulations, Section 16.5, the final Registration Roll (FRR) for each magisterial area shall have by now being published at all the magisterial office for public inspection.

Meanwhile, Boakai informed the court that his party views such delay on the part of the commission as irregularity that could undermine the integrity of the polls.

For now, judicial actors have asserted that Associate Justice in Chambers—Jamesetta Howard-Wolokolie will review the instrument and make a decision whether to invite the two parties to a conference before making determination of the writ as requested by the Unity Party.

In a related development, the National Elections Commission says all is well on course for the conduct of the October 10 2023 presidential and legislative elections following the arrival of ballot papers and other electoral materials.

Addressing a news conference in Monrovia Tuesday, the Chairperson of the Commission— Davidetta Browne Lansanah said the materials arrived in the country on Monday September 25, 2023 via the Roberts International Airport.

She said more than three million presidential ballots along with over three million senatorial ballots.

In the same vein, more than three million ballots were printed in the representative categories.

Meanwhile, the commission says the materials are under heavy security protection at its warehouse in Sinkor.

She said the deployment of the materials is expected to commence shortly.

Meanwhile, Madam Lansanah says the Final Registration Roll is being printed and will be presented to political parties once the process is completed.

She also spoke about the ongoing training of electoral workers.
