Liberians Await Presidential Election Results

Liberians are glued to their radios and social media pages awaiting provisional results following the official closed of Tuesday’s presidential and legislative elections.

Counting commenced immediately after voting closed at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

As approved by the electoral umpire, 20 presidential candidates participated in the process with each hoping for a resounding victory to rule a country of about five million people for the next five years.

But the fact remains that the race is between incumbent George Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change and former Vice President Joseph Boakai of the Unity Party.

Overall, the process was peaceful in parts of the country excluding thousands of people in the Southeastern region who could not vote due to bad roads occasioned by extreme weather conditions.

This is the fourth election to be held in the country since the end of a decade-long civil war that ended in 2003. It is the first election to be fully funded by the country.

Western and local observers have so far described as peaceful the atmosphere and impressive the desire of people to participate in the process.

“Generally we can say the election went peacefully! There is no major incident reported now, we see high participation especially in some places that are extremely overcrowded but they ensure that they remain there until they cast their ballots,” says European Union Chief Observer Mr. Andreas Schieder.
