In the wake of recent events during the Liberian Independence Day Celebration, the United States Embassy has released a statement to clarify the decision made by Chargé d’Affaires (CDA) Rodriguez to leave the event.

The United States and Liberia share a rich history and a commitment to democratic values. However, during the celebration, the national orator’s speech deviated into divisive rhetoric and included unfounded accusations, prompting a response from the U.S. diplomatic mission.

The Embassy highlighted the longstanding partnership between the two nations, noting that the United States contributes significantly to Liberia, with foreign assistance totaling at least $163 million annually.

This support is in addition to contributions made by the U.S. government to various international organizations that assist the Liberian populace. Furthermore, numerous U.S. foundations, private citizens, and non-governmental organizations continue to work diligently to uplift the Liberian people through various initiatives.

“In the light of the remarks made during the celebration, CDA Rodriguez departure was a measured response,” the Embassy stated. “Independence Day is a time for hope and unity, and while the orator has the right to freedom of speech, the CDA exercised her right not to engage with comments that contradicted the spirit of the occasion.”

The Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to Liberia, emphasizing a strong desire to maintain a positive and collaborative relationship founded on shared values and mutual respect.

“We look forward to continuing our productive partnership for the benefit of both nations,” the statement concluded.
